UPSC Geo-Scientist and Geologist Exam 2024 โ€“ Union Public Service Commission has released the notification for Geo-Scientist and Geologist Exam 2023 for the post of Geologists, Geophysicists, Chemists and Scientist B for 56 vacancies. Candidates with the qualification of Masterโ€™s Degree in the respective disciplines can apply for this examination. The selection process is based on the Preliminary Exam, Main Exam and Personality Test for the applied candidates. Eligible candidates can apply for this post online on or before 10 October 2023. Geologist Group โ€˜Aโ€™ in Geological Survey of India :

  • Masterโ€™s degree in Geological Science or Geology or Applied Geology or Geo- Exploration or Mineral Exploration or Engineering Geology or Marine Geology or Earth Science and Resource Management or Oceanography and Coastal Areas Studies or Petroleum Geosciences or Geochemistry from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or an educational institution established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed university under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 (3 of 1956) i.e. recognized University.

Geophysicist Group โ€˜Aโ€™ in Geological Survey of India and Scientist โ€˜Bโ€™ (Geophysics) Group โ€˜Aโ€™ in C.G.W.B. :

  • M.Sc. in Physics or Applied Physics or M.Sc. (Geophysics) or Integrated M.Sc. (Exploration Geophysics) or M.Sc (Applied Geophysics) or M.Sc. (Marine Geophysics) or M.Sc. (Tech.) (Applied Geophysics) from a University incorporated by an Act of Parliament or State Legislature in India or other educational institutes established by an Act of the Parliament or declared to be deemed universities under the University Grants Commission Act, 1956

Chemist Group โ€˜Aโ€™ in Geological Surveyย  India and Scientist โ€˜Bโ€™ (Chemical) under C.G.W.B.:

  • M. Sc. in Chemistry or Applied Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry from a University incorporated by an Act of Parliament or State Legislature or other educational Institutes established by an Act of the Parliament or declared to be deemed Universities under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 i.e. recognized University.

Scientist โ€˜Bโ€™ (Hydrogeology) Group โ€˜Aโ€™ in C.G.W.B. :

  • Masterโ€™s degree in Geology or applied Geology or Marine Geology or Hydrogeology from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational Institutes established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as Universities under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956

Age Limit (as on 01 January 2024):

For Geologist/ Geophysicist/ Chemist/Scientist:

  • Candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years

Age Relaxation:

  • For SC/ST candidates: 5 years
  • For OBC candidates: 3 years
  • For PWD candidates: 10 years
  • Others as per government policy

Selection Process ofย UPSC Geo-Scientist and Geologist Exam 2024:

The Combined Geo-Scientist Examination will consist of three stages



  • Stage-I: Preliminary Examination (Objective type)
  • Stage-II: Main Examination (Descriptive Type)
  • Stage-III: Personality Test/Interview

Exam Pattern:

Preliminary Examination:

  • Preliminary Examination is based on Computer Based Objective Type
  • It consists of two Objective Type (multiple choices) questions papers for each stream
  • The Question Papers will be set in English only
  • The Preliminary exam consists of Paper I & Paper II for 400 Marks

Paper-I: General Studies 2 Hrs 100
Paper-II: Stream Subject/ Category chosen by candidates 2 Hrs 300

Main Examination:

  • Main Examination will consist of three conventional type papers for each stream
  • The Question Papers will be set in English only
  • The Main exam consists of Paper I, Paper-II & Paper-III for 600 Marks

Note:

  • For each question for which a wrong answer has been given by the candidate, one-third of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty
  • If a question is left blank i.e. no answer is given by the candidate, there will be no penalty for that question.

Examination Fees:

  • Rs. 200/-
  • Excepting Female/ SC/ ST/ Persons with Benchmark Disability Candidates who are exempted from payment of a fee

Payment Mode: Candidates can pay the fees in any branch of State Bank of India or by using Visa/Master/RuPay Credit/Debit Card or by using Internet Banking of SBI.
